Costa Rica - General Information

Costa Rica known as the Switzerland of the Americas covers an area of 51,100 sq. km and is located in Middle America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, between Nicaragua and Panama. Costa Rica's population is of 3,674,490 (July 1999 est.) within an area slightly smaller than West Virginia.

Since 1848 free and compulsory education has resulted in a very high literacy rate of 94.8%. This high level of education has resulted in a highly skilled and educated labor force.

Costa Rica's climate is tropical with two seasons, a dry season from December to April, and a rainy season from May to November.

The major exporting commodities are manufactured products, coffee, bananas, textiles and sugar. The major export partners are the US, Benelux, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, El Salvador, Netherlands, UK and France.
